A Respiratory Therapy Technician assists in the delivery of respiratory care by supporting Respiratory Therapists and other healthcare professionals. They perform various tasks related to the management and treatment of patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary conditions.

Job Responsibilities:

Support and Assistance:

  • Assist Respiratory Therapists in administering respiratory therapies, including oxygen therapy, nebulizers, and mechanical ventilation.
  • Prepare and set up respiratory equipment such as ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP machines, and oxygen delivery systems.
  • Monitor and record patients' respiratory status, including vital signs and response to treatments.

Patient Care:

  • Provide direct patient care by positioning patients, assisting with breathing exercises, and monitoring comfort during therapy.
  • Help patients understand and follow prescribed respiratory therapies and techniques.
  • Support patients with activities related to their respiratory care, including mobility and positioning.

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Clean, sanitize, and maintain respiratory care equipment according to established protocols.
  • Ensure that all equipment is properly calibrated and functioning correctly before use.
  • Report any malfunctions or issues with equipment to supervisors or technical staff for repair.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Document patient care activities, including therapy administration, observations, and patient responses.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate and detailed records of treatments and patient progress.
  • Prepare reports and provide updates to Respiratory Therapists and other healthcare professionals as needed.

Safety and Infection Control:

  • Adhere to infection control procedures and safety protocols to prevent cross-contamination and protect patient health.
  • Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling respiratory care equipment and interacting with patients.

Education and Training:

  • Educate patients and their families on the use of respiratory equipment and techniques for managing respiratory conditions.
  • Provide support and instruction on home care procedures, including the use of prescribed respiratory devices.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with Respiratory Therapists, nurses, and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated and effective patient care.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to patient care planning and decision-making processes.

Professional Development:

  • Engage in ongoing training and development to stay current with advancements in respiratory therapy and related technologies.
  • Attend relevant workshops, seminars, and educational programs to enhance skills and knowledge.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education: An associate degree or certification in Respiratory Therapy or a related field is typically required.
  • Certification: Certification as a Respiratory Therapy Technician or a related credential may be required depending on the position and location.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in setting up and maintaining respiratory care equipment and performing basic respiratory procedures.
  • Clinical Skills: Ability to assist in administering respiratory therapies and monitoring patient responses.
  • Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication skills to interact with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in documenting patient care, handling equipment, and following safety protocols.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals and contribute to patient care teams.
