A Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for providing support to physicians and other healthcare providers in a medical office or clinic setting. Job Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties:
- Prepare patients for examinations by taking their vital signs, recording medical history, and ensuring they are comfortable.
- Assist physicians during patient examinations and minor procedures.
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens, and perform basic lab tests.
- Administer medications and vaccinations under the direction of a physician.
- Conduct routine procedures such as drawing blood, changing dressings, and removing sutures.
- Sterilize medical instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
- Educate patients about prescribed medications, special diets, and other physician-directed instructions.
- Handle patient inquiries, providing information about medical treatments, procedures, and medication instructions.
Administrative Duties:
- Schedule patient appointments and manage the physician’s calendar.
- Answer phone calls, respond to emails, and manage correspondence.
- Greet patients, check them in for appointments, and verify insurance information.
- Maintain accurate and confidential patient records, updating them as necessary.
- Process insurance claims and handle billing and coding.
- Order medical supplies and maintain inventory.
- Handle patient billing, including processing payments and managing patient accounts.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Education: Typically, a high school diploma or equivalent is required, with completion of an accredited medical assistant program preferred.
- Certification: Certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) may be required or preferred by employers.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) systems, medical billing software, and basic office software.
