Patient Services Technician

The Patient Services Technician supports patient care by performing a range of tasks, including specimen collection, basic patient care, and assisting healthcare professionals. The PST ensures that patients receive high-quality care and that the healthcare environment is maintained according to safety and cleanliness standards. This role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, and mobility.
  • Monitor and record vital signs, such as blood pressure, temperature, and pulse, as directed by nursing staff.
  • Provide comfort and reassurance to patients, addressing their needs and concerns.
  • Collect blood, urine, and other specimens from patients for laboratory analysis.
  • Perform basic laboratory tests, such as blood glucose monitoring, under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients by cleaning patient rooms, equipment, and common areas.
  • Ensure that all medical equipment is sanitized and properly stored after use.
  • Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, including updating medical records and ensuring proper documentation.
  • Work closely with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Completion of a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or related certification program is preferred.
    • Certification in phlebotomy may be required depending on the job responsibilities.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital, clinic, or long-term care facility, is preferred.
    • Experience with specimen collection and basic laboratory procedures is an asset.
  • Skills:
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
    • Ability to perform basic patient care tasks with compassion and attention to detail.
    • Knowledge of infection control practices and basic laboratory techniques.
    • Physical stamina to assist patients with mobility and perform tasks such as lifting and transporting patients.

Working Conditions:

  • Environment:
    • Work is typically performed in healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities.
    • May involve exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and sharp objects.
  • Hours:
    • Full-time or part-time, with possible shifts on weekends, holidays, and evenings depending on the needs of the facility.
