The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) plays a vital role in providing direct patient care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs). The CNA is responsible for assisting patients with daily activities, monitoring their health status, and supporting the nursing team in delivering compassionate and effective care.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
  • Help patients with mobility, including transferring them from beds to chairs and assisting with walking.
  • Provide basic care, including feeding patients, monitoring their fluid intake, and ensuring their comfort and hygiene.
  • Measure and record patients’ vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.
  • Observe and report any changes in patients’ conditions, such as pain, discomfort, or behavioral changes, to nursing staff.
  • Document patient care activities, including ADLs, vital signs, and any observations in the patients' medical records accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members regarding patient care, needs, and any changes in condition.
  • Follow infection control procedures, including hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and proper disposal of medical waste.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients by adhering to safety protocols and ensuring that equipment and supplies are properly sanitized.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Completion of a state-approved Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program.
    • Current certification as a CNA in the state of practice.
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital, nursing home, or assisted living facility, is preferred but not always required.
    • Experience with specific patient populations or specialties may be beneficial depending on the setting.
  • Skills:
    • Strong understanding of basic nursing care procedures and practices.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
    • Ability to follow instructions and work under the supervision of RNs or LPNs.
    • Compassionate and patient-centered approach to care.
    • Ability to handle physical demands of the job, including lifting, transferring, and supporting patients.

Working Conditions:

  • Environment:
    • Work is typically performed in healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and home health care environments.
    • May involve exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and other potentially hazardous materials.
  • Hours:
    • Full-time or part-time, with possible shifts on weekends, holidays, and evenings depending on the needs of the facility.
