Restorative Nursing Assistant

The Restorative Nursing Assistant (RNA) provides specialized care to patients by assisting with restorative and rehabilitative activities aimed at maintaining or improving physical function and independence. Working under the supervision of licensed nurses and in collaboration with therapists, the RNA implements restorative care plans, monitors patient progress, and ensures that patients receive the support they need to achieve their rehabilitation goals.

  • Restorative Care Implementation:
    • Assist patients with restorative exercises and activities designed to improve or maintain their physical abilities, such as range-of-motion exercises, strength training, and ambulation.
    • Help patients with self-care tasks, including bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting, encouraging independence whenever possible.
    • Support the use of adaptive equipment and devices, such as walkers, canes, braces, and prosthetics, ensuring patients can use them safely and effectively.
  • Mobility and Ambulation:
    • Assist patients with walking, transferring, and positioning to promote mobility and prevent complications like pressure ulcers or contractures.
    • Implement ambulation programs as directed by the nursing or therapy team, ensuring patients follow prescribed routines to improve or maintain their ability to walk.
  • Patient Monitoring and Reporting:
    • Monitor patients for changes in physical abilities, strength, and endurance, and report any significant changes or concerns to the supervising nurse or therapist.
    • Record and document patient progress, restorative activities, and any observations in the patient's medical record.
    • Participate in care plan meetings and provide input on patient progress and suggested modifications to the restorative care plan.
  • Patient Safety and Comfort:
    • Ensure a safe environment for patients by following safety protocols, such as proper body mechanics, infection control practices, and fall prevention strategies.
    • Provide emotional support and encouragement to patients, helping them stay motivated and engaged in their restorative programs.
    • Assist with maintaining a clean and organized patient area, ensuring that all equipment is in good working condition.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
    • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to provide updates on patient progress and address any concerns or questions.
    • Collaborate with nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated and comprehensive care.
    • Educate patients and families on restorative care techniques and the use of adaptive equipment to promote independence at home.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a state-approved Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training program; additional certification or training in restorative care is preferred.
  • Current certification as a CNA and state licensure as required.
  • Previous experience in a restorative or rehabilitative care setting is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of restorative care principles, exercises, and adaptive equipment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Compassionate and patient-centered approach to care.
  • Physical stamina to assist with patient mobility and perform other physically demanding tasks.

Work Environment:

  • Restorative Nursing Assistants typically work in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, or long-term care facilities.
  • The role involves direct patient interaction and may require physical activities such as lifting, transferring patients, and assisting with therapeutic exercises.
  • The position may involve working various shifts, including evenings, nights, and weekends, depending on the facility’s needs.
