The Nursing Assistant Technician (NAT) provides essential patient care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and other healthcare professionals. The role involves assisting with daily activities, performing basic clinical tasks, and ensuring the comfort and safety of patients. The NAT plays a crucial role in the overall patient care team, contributing to the efficient operation of healthcare facilities and the well-being of patients.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, and toileting.
- Support patient mobility by helping with transfers, ambulation, and repositioning in bed to prevent pressure ulcers.
- Monitor and record patients' vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rates, and report any abnormalities to the nursing staff.
- Collect specimens, including blood, urine, and other bodily fluids, for laboratory testing as directed by the nursing or medical staff.
- Perform routine tasks such as catheter care, ostomy care, and ensuring that medical equipment is properly maintained and sterilized.
- Observe patients for changes in condition, behavior, or symptoms and promptly report findings to the supervising nurse or physician.
- Accurately document patient care activities, including intake and output, vital signs, and any procedures performed, in the patient's medical record.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their families, providing clear explanations of care procedures and addressing any concerns or questions.
- Provide emotional support to patients, especially those undergoing stressful or difficult medical treatments.
- Follow strict infection control protocols, including proper hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe disposal of medical waste.
- Ensure that patient rooms and common areas are kept clean, orderly, and free of hazards to promote a safe environment.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a state-approved nursing assistant certification program (CNA) or equivalent.
- Additional certification as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Nursing Assistant Technician (NAT) may be required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Strong knowledge of basic medical terminology and clinical procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a healthcare team.
- Physical stamina and the ability to lift, move, and assist patients as needed.
- Compassionate, patient-focused approach to caregiving.
Work Environment:
- Nursing Assistant Technicians typically work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, outpatient clinics, and other healthcare settings.
- The role involves physical demands such as standing, walking, lifting, and assisting patients with mobility.
